Apu Salkantay Mountain

Apu Salkantay
Apu Salkantay

Salkantay is the highest peak in the Vilcabamba mountain range, part of the Peruvian Andes. It is located in the Cusco region, about 60 km (40 miles) northwest of the city of Cusco.

Salkantay proximity to Machu Picchu makes trekking around it an alternative to the Inca Trail; this is known as the Salkantay trek.

The name Salkantay is from sallqa, a Quechua word meaning wild, uncivilized, savage, or invincible, and was recorded as early as 1583. The name is thus often translated as "Savage Mountain".

Climbing the Salkantay Mountain

Salcantay is a large, steep peak with great vertical relief, particularly above the low valleys to the north, which are tributaries of the Apurimac and Vilcanota Rivers.

The standard route on the mountain is the Northeast ridge. Accessing the route typically involves three days of travel from Cusco. The climb involves about 1,800 m (5,900 ft) of vertical gain, on glacier, snow, ice, and some rock.

Llaqtapata archaeological site

Llaqtapata is an archaeological site about 5 km (3.1 mi) west of Machu Picchu. The complex is located in the Cusco Region, La Convención Province, Santa Teresa District, high on a ridge between the Ahobamba and Santa Teresa drainages.

The site presents walls with niches. It is located on some ravines. From this place you have a view towards Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.

Trekking to Llaqtapata
Trekking to Llaqtapata
Llactapata is a beautiful place from which one can contemplate one of the greatest dramas of the Andes and reflect on how little we know about the complex intellectual world of the ancient Peruvians.

It is located in a small chain of ravines, near the top of a steep slope that rises higher than Machu Picchu itself.

Most of the photos we are used to seeing from Machu Picchu are taken from the other side, the north side. Very few people in modern times have seen Machu Picchu from the other side, from Llactapata, where it is appreciated above from the southwest.

For example, the Huayna Picchu, the mound that dominates Machu Picchu in most photographs, is almost insignificant seen from the new angle offered by Llactapata.

The only place where weather is a serious concern is the Salkantay Pass, and the nearby areas. Temperatures here, and at the nearby Soraypampa campsite, can fall below freezing. Trip of a lifetime!!!

The start of our adventure - Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

I did the 4 day/ 3 night Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was was an unbelievable experience that was led by our tour guide Santiago Ballon, along with 2 cooks, and 1 horse man.

The 4 of them took such good care of us along the trek. They prepped and cooked all the meals: great food that was made with love. They had our tents set up by the time we had reaches the camp grounds.

On the last day of our trek it was very hard to say goodbye to the staff. They had become so close to us. But I will highly recommend this staff because they are very reliable.

Thank you for an amazing Trip! =)
