Moray and Salt Mines of Maras Tour in Half Day

Salt mines of Maras
Salt mines of Maras

MARAS

Maras is a district of the Urubamba province, possible to be reached through a paved road from kilometer 50 on the road Cusco - Chinchero - Urubamba. It is located towards the west of Qosqo at an altitude of 3300 mts. (10824 feet); over a plain that in prehistoric times was a huge plateau, from which it is possible to observe the range of mountains of Urubamba including the snow capped mountains of Weqey Willka (today "La Veronica", 5682 mts., 18641 ft.) and "Chikon" (5530 mts., 18143 ft.).

It seems that in Maras there was a pre-Inkan settlement with subsequent discontinued occupation. All over this zone there is a large amount of pottery pieces of the "Chanapata" culture, as well as obsidian scrapers and knives. The town was founded in colonial times by Pedro Ortiz de Orue, and its important occupation began when the Cusquenian Inkan noblemen were dispossessed of their palaces in Qosqo and had to move settling some other small towns such as San Sebastian and Maras. Likewise, during the war started by Manko Inka willing to recover his Quechua nation, it served as stronghold for invaders that raided against the Ollantaytambo town that was occupied by the Inka during 2 years.

Many of its houses are emblazoned with Spanish nobility coats of arms on their lintels, which indicates the importance gained by the town in colonial times. By that time, it was an obliged way for muleteers and their mule droves transporting tropical goods and especially coca leaves from the higher jungle for supplying the markets of the city and the country. It was declared "Villa of Saint Francis of Assisi of Maras" (Villa: city or town that had certain privileges).

By that time it had much more importance than the Urubamba settlement; but, today it is a town that languishes due to its isolation and development of modern life. It has a church made with sun dried mud bricks, typical of the village religious architecture, in which front patio is a cross carved in granite. Inside the church are Cusquenian school canvases representing the Apostles, and some other very nice ones, the artist being Quechua painter Antonio Sinchi Roqa Inka. He was native from Maras and painted carefully for its church; he was contemporary of bishop Mollinedo y Angulo and became famous by the middle of XVII century.

Moray - The agricultural terraces
Moray
MORAY

About 7 kms. (4.3 miles) away southwest from Maras is Moray, a very unique archaeological site in the region. It is possible to reach it by car through the dusty road and the path departing from the town. Those are enormous natural depressions or hollows in the ground surface that Inkas used for constructing irrigated farming terraces around them. What is surprising is that the difference of average annual temperature between the top and the bottom reaches even about 15°C (59°F) in the main depression that is about 30 mts (100 feet) deep. In those natural formations, nature has created an environment, conditions or micro climates that in modern times people create in greenhouses or hothouses. Moray, because of its climate conditions and many other characteristics, was an important center of domestication, acclimatization and hybridization of wild vegetable species that were modified or adapted for human consumption.

Therefore, it is a prototype of a greenhouse or experimental biological station, very advanced for its age that helped so that the ancient American Man could leave for mankind about 60% of the vegetable goods that are consumed; so that the Andean Man could consume three thousand different potato varieties, one and a half hundreds of maize, and many other rich goods. Nevertheless, there are still many enigmas about this site, enigmas that rise because of the lack of serious scientific researches that could clear present doubts. Structures found over here are typically Inkan; although, some authors suggest that they are earlier ones, at least in the lower terraces.

One of the enigmas is the way how drainage for water flowing through the aqueducts worked; it is suggested that there must be underground channels built by the depressions' bottom allowing water to drain. It is also argued that the bottom is over a very porous natural rock formation that enables water filtering toward the earth's interior; the truth is that even today, in the depressions' bottoms there are no floods neither inundation in the rainy season. It is indispensable to carry out serious palynology studies; that is, divers analysis of the pollen samples that are found in Moray, thus it will be possible to know the nature, species, quality and some other characteristics of the vegetables cultivated over here.

SALINERAS (SALT MINES)
Towards the northwest of the Maras village are the famous "salt works", which are possible to reach walking by the trail or by car through a dusty road that is almost useless in the rainy season. The Maras "salt works" to which some people call "salt mines" are constituted by about 3000 small pools with an average area of 5 m² (53.8 ft²), constructed in a slope of the "Qaqawiñay" mountain. People fill up or "irrigate" the pools during the dry season every 3 days, with salty water emanating from a natural spring located on the top of the complex, so that when water evaporates the salt contained in it will slowly solidify. That process will be carried out approximately during one month until a considerable volume of solid salt is obtained; about 10 cms. (4 inches) high from the floor. That solid salt is beaten thus granulated, then packed in plastic sacks and sent to the region's markets; today that salt began being treated with iodine, thus, its consumption is not harmful.

ITINERARY
We pick you up at 8:30am or 12:30pm drive in our private transport until the village of Maras where they still keep a good part of its colonial architectural beauty. You can see made of thin stone, lintels with sculptures in bas-relief.  Then we go to Salineras where the salt mine is located consisting of 3,000 small pools roughly 5 square metres (53.8 ft²) in size. Every three days, during the dry season, workers fill the pools with salt water that comes from a natural hot spring at the top of the Maras complex. When the water evaporates from the pool, the salt is left for collection. This process is carried out over a one month period until the pools reach an approximate volume of solid salt that is 10 centimetres (4 inches) in height. The salt is ground up, treated with iodine packaged and sent to various markets in the region. It is a short picturesque walk downhill from Salineras taking approximately 40 minutes back to our transport.

Then we go to the Moray ruins located at 3,450m, where we find the agricultural terraces of Moray with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. Different levels of terraces are carved into a huge bowl, part of which was further excavated by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on how deep into the bowl they are and they were thought to have been used by the Incas to discover the optimal conditions for their crops. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.

Then we return to your hotel in Cusco.

Sacred Valley Tour Full day

Ollantaytambo Monolithen - Sacred Valley Tour

OUR ITINERARY

08:30 am pick up from your hotel.
09:00 am beginning of your excursion.

The Pisac market

The Pisac market is a must-see for those visiting the Cusco region. Every day, the streets fill to overflowing with artisans selling their goods and tourists from all over the world buying them. Sunday is the best and busiest day to visit by far. Villagers from miles around pack up their llamas and donkeys in the early hours of the morning in order to arrive and set up stalls where they sell vegetables and other produce.

Even if you're not a shopper, the market is worth a visit. It's a great place to take photos and people-watch. Many of the cafés around the market have second-story balconies providing good views of the commotion below. The quality of the goods can be a little sketchy, and, if you're looking to spend a lot of money on any one item, you're better off in a fine gallery or store in Cusco or Lima. But prices are low (though higher than in the Cusco markets) and it is a great place to buy memorable souvenirs for friends back home.

Pisac market

P'isaq Archaeological Park

The Archaelogical Park of Pisac is one of the most important archaeological region. Possibly its name comes from a very common type of Bird in this area known as "P'isaqa". Some scholars suggest that the pre-Columbian city was in the form of a "P'isaqa" representing the local faun. Today there are a colonial Town named P'isaq.

In the Inca City there is a famous Local Market, full of crafts and local products.

Pisac Archaeological Park

Archaeological Complex of Ollantaytambo

The archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo was a strategic military, religious and agricultural center. The architectural scene is exceptional in its the size, style and originality of its buildings. For the Quechua language, the name comes from the word

Ollanta (which is the name of an Inca captain, whose story was saved as an oral tradition, and written as a drama of Antonio Valdez Urubamba priest in mid-eighteenth century) Also a Spanish derivation of the word tampu (Tambo) Quechua, which means

"City that offers accommodation, food and comfort to passengers."

Agricultural activity in this area benefited from the presence of the Patacancha creek, where there are large terraces that currently are damaged and abandoned.

Archaeological Complex of Ollantaytambo

Chinchero

The typical Chinchero is a Inca city, the conquerors wanted to "civilize" and establish their culture, but never succeeded, because they fully resisted. Today you can see this resistance in its inhabitants, as they inhabit the Inca constructions almost intact, in the same place where their ancestors lived and formed the largest and most prosperous civilization in America.

the Rainbow City is located 28 km. northwest of the Cusco city, over 3,762 meters, at an intermediate location between the highlands and warm valley, surrounded by snow-capped Salkantay, Veronica and Soray. The view from here is awesome. Chinchero was chosen by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui to establish his residence

At 19:00pm aprox, we'll arrive in Cusco, transfer to your hotel or if you decide you can stop in the beautiful mean square of this City.

Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and Huaynapicchu 3 Days

Inca Trail 3 days - Wiñayhuayna

Availability for Inca Trail to Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu 3 Days / 2 Nights

The Peruvian government has strict limitations on how many people are permitted to use the Inca Trail (permits are issued to about 200 trekkers per day and about 300 porters/guides with a total of 500 permits issued daily). We recommend booking the Inca Trail as early as possible, sometimes even 6 months in advance!

We also recommend booking the Inca Trail trek before booking your hotels, flights, etc., since Inca Trail permits are limited!

Daily departures are available throughout the year (March through January-February the Inca Trail is closed), even though the recommended period for this trek is April to October because it is the dry season.

Lares Trek to Machu Picchu in 4 days

Lares Trek in 4 days - Hot Springs

Lares is a valley near the city of Cusco, is home to people who weave and cultivate the land (Weavers and farmers), they do things traditionally and also speak Quechua and Spanish, their tissues do manually, both knitting and cultivate use ansestratales tools used by the Incas.

The Lares trek is one of the main alternatives to the Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek, is a shorter leisurely walk, is close to the city of Cusco, besides that there is no special permits for the tour, also is quieter than the Inca Trail and we have for you the classic 4 day hike that we assure you that you will love it very much.

Lares is located in Cusco, this remote and rarely visited region offers the trekker an insight into traditional Andean life; a timeless world where farmers plant their crops on the lands their ancestors tended and watch over herds of llama and alpaca beneath the sacred snow-covered peaks they worshipped as gods. The trail is one of the Inca trails from the time of the Inca Empire.

Today, the trail is still in use by farmers, who are Inca descendents. The trail connects the communities of Cuncani, Huacahuasi, Quisuarani, Patacancha and Lares with life in the Sacred Valley. Choquequirao Trek in 4 Days

Choquequirao Trek

This Arqueological Complex is very interesting and one of the most popular treks in Cusco area. This trail is situated in the spur of the mountain range of Salkantay, over 3030m surrounded by the Apus of Yamana, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasiyo and Panta, on the left bank of Apurimac River. In the time of the Incas, it was united and in communication with Machu Picchu by a complex network of trails.

The reasons are many: The fantastic nature with valleys, snow-capped mountains and great variety of plants, birds and animals. Choquequiraw is considered as "The Last Refuge of the Inca Empire". Visitors can view a complex hydraulic system, most likely for domestic, ceremonial and agricultural use. Its geographic location in reference to other complexes of the same period would tend to indicate that its function was that of an Inca enclave toward the valleys of the Apurímac River.

New Year in Cusco and Machu Picchu in 4 days

Special event for those who want to celebrate New Year in Cusco. Include: City tour + Sacred valley of the Incas + Machu Picchu + New year' eve party.

Celebrate New Year with an exquisite fancy dinner and fun until next morning.

 New Year in Cusco

New year in the capital of the Incas

Let's us show you all the chaos and excitement of the New Year's celebration in Cusco.

Cusco is one of the two most popular places to celebrate New Years in Peru

The city grows in anticipation before christmas leading up to the big night. Tourists from all over Peru, Latin-American, Europe and the world gather in Cusco and fill up the hostels and hotels. Street vendors line the streets, while natives come in from outside the city to sell their crafts and products as well as to experience the festivities.

One of the most interesting things about cruising around the open street markets is seeing all the superstitious tokens Peruvians purchase for the New Years celebration.

Yellow is the color people choose for luck, everything from yellow hats, confettis, flowers and underwears.

Fireworks are everywhere. Kids sold them on the streets, families lit them off as they walk and crazy people shot them at each other and lit them off themselves.

The most amazing thing about the fireworks is watching the sky fill up with multiple colors and explosions for hours from the main square out into the surrounding hills of Cusco.

At midnight, everyone starts running around Plaza de Armas for good luck. Some locals carry around suitcases as they run, which is good luck for traveling in the New Year.

It is the most incredible festivals.

Our program of New Year's Eve in Cusco, includes, Machupicchu tour and the best itinerary of Cusco.

Let´s enjoy it
