Royal Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 4 days

The Royal Inca Trail to Machu Picchu “The Famous Inca Trail” still existed and was re-discovered by Hiram Bingham when he realized his clearing work between 1913 and 1915. The Inca trail was a route of pilgrimage to Machu Picchu used by the Inca (or Emperor / King) in the 15th century. There are different sites between Ollantaytambo Inca City and Machu Picchu Inca City where one can note the variety in architectural resources that give rationality, importance and mysticism to the Royal Road. It did not have a commercial use; there were other, more simple, trails to transport products, llamas and people to Machu Picchu. The purpose of the Inca Trail To Machupícchu was religious and ceremonial, a pilgrimage that included rituals to honour the mountains and peaks of the route, like Veronica Mts or Wakaywilka Mts.

Moray, Maras and Machu Picchu in 2 days

Visit two of the most interesting and unique Inca archaeological sites in Peru, the "green houses" of the Incas in Moray with an impressive deep amphitheater like terrace swirling around in agriculture beauty; and the Salt Mine of Maras, watch the salt streams naturally evaporate as they bask in the sunshine to be harvested by the local farmers as they have done for centuries.

ITINERARY

Day 1 : Cusco – Moray – Salt Mine – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley navigating through the hairpin bends each motion in change of direction stirring the pot of excitement within as we arrive at the stunning Inca site of Moray also known as “The Greenhouses of the Incas” which is unique and fascinating.

Different levels of terraces are carved into a huge bowl, part of which was further excavated by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on how deep into the bowl they are and so they were thought to have been used by the Incas to discover the optimal conditions for their crops.

With energy enhanced full of positive vibrations the mind is open to exploring this next beautiful Inca sight, the colonial town of Maras and to the Pre-Inca Salt Mine (Salineras). Thousands of salt pans have been used for salt extraction since before Inca times.

A hot spring at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of heavily salt laden water, which is diverted into salt pans and evaporated to produce a salt that is used for cattle licks.

Continuing to enhance your journey of discovery we travel to the quaint Ollantaytambo, following on the cobblestone covered pathways to where you will explore the Massive Inca remains with our guide.

In preparation for our connection to the legend Machu Picchu we board our train to Aguas Calientes. On arrival the hotel representative will greet and transfer you for your night in the hotel.

Huayna Picchu Sacred Mountain

Descending from Huayna Picchu
Descending from Huayna Picchu

Huayna Picchu is a sacred mountain. It is located over Machu Picchu. The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top. The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top. The peak of Huayna Picchu is 2,693 metres (8,835 ft) above sea level, or about 260 metres (850 ft) higher than Machu Picchu.

According to local guides, the top of the mountain was the residence for the high priest and the local virgins. Every morning before sunrise, the high priest with a small group would walk to Machu Picchu to signal the coming of the new day.

Huayna Picchu is one of the most in-demand additional hikes available and it may be visited throughout the year, but the number of daily visitors allowed on Huayna Picchu is restricted to 400. A steep and, at times, exposed pathway leads to the summit. Some portions are slippery and steel cables (a via ferrata) provide some support during the one-hour climb. The ascent is more challenging between November and April because the path up the mountain becomes slippery in the rainy season. Better conditions for climbing can be expected during the dry season, which runs from May to September.

From the summit, a second trail leads down to the Gran Caverna and what is known as the Temple of the Moon. These natural caves, on the northern face of the mountain, are lower than the starting point of the trail. The return path from the caves completes a loop around the mountain where it rejoins the main trail.

Huayna Picchu Booking

To trek Huayna Picchu one must be in Machu Picchu with a specific combination ticket for both Machu Picchu itself and Huayna Picchu.

From the main entrance of Machu Picchu you take the lower circuit around the site. The trail head is located far north of the Machu Picchu citadel behind the Sacred Rock. The entrance is clearly marked with a large sign at the warden’s hut. From the main entrance of Machu Picchu it takes 15-20 minutes to walk to the trail head.

After signing in at the warden’s hut (passport number and name required), the Huayna Picchu Trail follows an undulating path for 15 – 20 minutes until the trail splits. The upper path continues to the summit of Huayna Picchu, and the lower trail continues around the base of the mountain to the Great Cavern and the Moon Temple before climbing a steep incline to the summit.

Fantastic Adventure

Inca Jungle Trek - Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu in 4 days
Inca Jungle Trek

Did the Private Inca Jungle excursion with some adjusted camping options and loved the areas where we camped (or tried to camp as well). Flexibility is the name of the game in those mountains and this team knows how to handle it. They led a great excursion and taught us a lot about Peru and the Andean Mountains where we were cutting through. All good things for this company! Awesome adventure.

Llaqtapata archaeological site

Llaqtapata is an archaeological site about 5 km (3.1 mi) west of Machu Picchu. The complex is located in the Cusco Region, La Convención Province, Santa Teresa District, high on a ridge between the Ahobamba and Santa Teresa drainages.

The site presents walls with niches. It is located on some ravines. From this place you have a view towards Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.

Trekking to Llaqtapata
Trekking to Llaqtapata
Llactapata is a beautiful place from which one can contemplate one of the greatest dramas of the Andes and reflect on how little we know about the complex intellectual world of the ancient Peruvians.

It is located in a small chain of ravines, near the top of a steep slope that rises higher than Machu Picchu itself.

Most of the photos we are used to seeing from Machu Picchu are taken from the other side, the north side. Very few people in modern times have seen Machu Picchu from the other side, from Llactapata, where it is appreciated above from the southwest.

For example, the Huayna Picchu, the mound that dominates Machu Picchu in most photographs, is almost insignificant seen from the new angle offered by Llactapata.
